ACUPUNCTURE IN OTTAWA, ON

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture Ottawa

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment for pain and other health issues that has been used for thousands of years. It's based on the belief that energy flows through our bodies along pathways called meridians. The theory behind acupuncture can be complex. In essence, we are working to regain balance in the body, shifting systems or organs back to a stable state, so the body can function optimally. Be it pain, fertility, or digestion, while the protocol may be unique to each person the goal is still the same: homeostasis. To understand how Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches this, think about how the body can be overwhelmed in the form of inflammation. Conversely, the body can feel underwhelmed as a result of the depletion of vitamins. In both examples, we can balance out the body using acupuncture.

Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate specific points on the body to restore balance and improve health. During a session, fine needles are gently inserted just below the skin’s surface in specific areas (called acupoints) along energy channels, which may cause a mild tingling sensation or even feel like nothing at all. In addition to needles, our acupuncturist may incorporate moxibustion. Acupuncture does not typically hurt, and our sessions are always carried out with you in complete control.

Community acupuncture

Community acupuncture is a model of acupuncture practice that aims to make this holistic therapy more accessible and affordable to a broader range of people. In a community acupuncture setting, treatments typically take place in a group setting rather than in private rooms, which helps reduce costs and fosters a sense of community. In these settings, patients sit in comfortable recliners or chairs while receiving acupuncture treatments. The acupuncturist typically uses points on the arms, legs, and head, allowing patients to remain fully clothed and in a relaxed atmosphere.

Postpartum acupuncture

In this 75min session, the acupuncture treatment is specific to the mother’s needs and can address issues like fatigue, low milk supply, return of the menstrual cycle, hot flashes and sweats, emotional support and PDD.

Note: For the postpartum acupuncture, this service requires baby to be present. During the acupuncture treatment, Carine will take care of your baby while momma gets to relax.

Women’s Health Conditions Supported By Acupuncture:

Acupuncture can be used to support a large variety of illnesses and conditions.

Menstrual and hormonal conditions

Acupuncture addresses the symptoms of hormonal imbalance by rebalancing your body's overall hormonal system. If testing has been done, we can target the affected endocrine glands; otherwise, we can simply address the symptoms. In both cases, long-term hormonal balance can be restored.

Fertility

Acupuncture helps you reduce stress and supports overall health and the function of your reproductive system. Fertility acupuncture also helps balance hormones, regulate cycles, improve egg quality, and support ovulation. Fertility acupuncture is often used for a variety of conditions and issues related to fertility including anovulation, PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, low ovarian reserve, irregular periods, and other hormonal concerns.

Digestive concerns

Since the nervous system regulates digestion (the parasympathetic nervous system is often associated with “resting and digesting”), we aim to help you regulate the nervous system and improve digestion by addressing the symptoms of digestive dysfunction. By targeting digestion this way, we're able to slow down digestion if it is moving too quickly. Conversely, in cases of constipation, acupuncture helps move things along.

Pelvic Pain

Acupuncture can help reduce inflammation in a specific area of the body, like the pelvic area, and in the whole body overall. It also encourages the body to produce pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins and serotonin, as well as encouraging the immune system to flush out tissues such as smaller fibroids that are causing issues.

Menopause

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we address menopause by balancing the Yin and Yang. The Yin is the ability to calm down the body fluids: hormones. The Yang is the energetic side, the ability to get up and go: movement in the body. A deficiency in either can contribute to menopausal symptoms like night sweats, hot flashes, and restless sleep. Acupuncture can help to restore balance and address other prominent symptoms like vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, prolapses, and weight gain.

Chronic Illnesses & Conditions

Acupuncture can also be a powerful treatment modality for a variety of chronic illnesses and complex chronic pain. In addition to its ability to create a sense of ease and restore a sense of balance in your body’s systems, acupuncture targets the origin of illness by supporting & restoring normal body functions.

Mental Health

Acupuncture can support mental health, including anxiety, depression, stress, and more, by regulating your body’s stress response, encouraging positive and “happy” chemicals like serotonin and endorphins, balancing your hormones, relaxing the nervous system, and reducing inflammation.
